RESTORING LANDS AND BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

· Nearly 40% of the Colombian territory presents some degree of soil degradation due to erosion, which generates negative impacts on food production.

· June 5 reminds us of the urgency of restoring ecosystems and combating desertification to ensure a sustainable future. World Vision is committed to this mission through initiatives in the Central American Dry Corridor and the Amazon Basin.

Ecosystems around the world are at risk. According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40% of the planet’s land areas are degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population.

Given the increase in the duration and frequency of droughts, Projections indicate that more than three-quarters of the world’s population could be affected by droughts by 2050. This situation demands urgent and effective actions to restore the land and ensure the sustainability of a sustainable future.

“As an organization, we recognize this situation and consider that responding to climate change and environmental degradation is a matter of justice, represented in the interdependence of human rights, development and climate action. This recognition puts girls and boys at the center of the environmental crisis and allows us to advance appropriate solutions for people and the planet by defending their rights,” says Esteban Ricardo, Climate Sustainability and Climate Action Leader at World Vision.

Within the framework of World Environment Day, the humanitarian organization shares the largest initiatives at the regional level that seek environmental sustainability for the most vulnerable children and families.

Amazon Basin Initiative by World Vision

The Amazon Basin, known for its vast biodiversity and crucial role as a climate regulator, faces significant threats due to deforestation, illegal mining and climate change. This vital ecosystem covers 54% of the world’s primary forests and is home to more than 48.5 million people.

By 2030, the humanitarian organization aims to overcome poverty and improve the well-being of 10 million people in the Amazon region, ensuring the preservation and restoration of this invaluable ecosystem. where the proposed goals are: the conservation of 22 million hectares and restoring 3 million hectares of Amazonian ecosystems; the protection of 1 million girls, boys, adolescents and women from violence, natural crises and malnutrition, in addition to promoting climate-smart agriculture and sustainable value chains.

“World Vision implements the Regreening Communities project model, which seeks to conserve ecosystems and generate a sustainable base of natural resources for children and families to build prosperous and sustainable livelihoods. Forest restoration is essential to regulate the water cycle, provide food, medicine, improve air quality and conserve biodiversity,” adds Esteban Ricardo.

Central American Dry Corridor Initiative by World Vision

The Central American Dry Corridor is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change. This territory, stretching from Chiapas, Mexico, to Guanacaste, Costa Rica, is home to 22.5 million people who face critical challenges such as food insecurity and lack of access to drinking water.

World Vision’s objective is to positively impact the lives of 10 million inhabitants of the Dry Corridorpromoting the protection of natural resources and mitigating the negative impacts of climate change and has put its efforts to achieve three major objectives in the face of the challenges facing the Central American region:

· Environment regeneration: Green the Dry Corridor to improve living conditions.

· Comprehensive management of water resources: Strengthen the capacity of communities to manage their water resources.

· Food security and nutrition: Implement good agricultural practices and promote healthy environments.

World Environment Day is a reminder of the importance of collective action. You can’t go back in time, but you can reforest forests, revitalize water sources and restore soils.

World Vision’s commitment to land restoration and drought resilience in the Central American Dry Corridor and the Amazon Basin reflects the promotion of the protection and revitalization of ecosystems for the transformation of the lives of families and children. vulnerable.
