The founder of Wikileaks was released the day before from a prison in London, where he was held for almost 2,000 days.

The plane in which the founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, is traveling, released on Monday in London after reaching an agreement with the United States justice system, is already heading to the Mariana Islands, a free associated territory of the United States.

This last leg of the long journey from London takes him to where he will have to appear before a US court, after making a technical stop in Bangkok, the Thai capital.

Assange’s plane stops in Bangkok, Thailand

The flight tracking, according to the Flightradar portal, specialized in monitoring air routes, shows the charter VJT199 of the VistaJet company taking off around 9:20 p.m. (2:20 p.m. UTC) from Don Mueang airport, in the north of Bangkok, where it remained for more than 8 hours.

The aircraft carrying Assange is now scheduled to complete a journey of almost 6 hours to land in Saipan, in the Northern Mariana Islands.

WikiLeaks’ social media profile just before the plane took off and when sharing a web portal where the aircraft’s route could be viewed live, wrote “Please follow #AssangeJet, we need all eyes on the flight in case something happens.” evil”. In a few minutes, more than 39,000 people were following the flight on the Flightradar portal.

Saipan, where Assange is heading, is the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands (NMI), a US territory located in the western Pacific that begins about 70 km north of Guam and extends across 14 islands.

Like territories such as Guam or Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands are part of the United States, but do not have the full status of a state like Hawaii.

Its approximately 51,000 residents are American citizens, but cannot vote in presidential elections. However, some cities, such as Saipan, are also home to US district courts.

And this Wednesday, the 52-year-old founder of Wikileaks is scheduled to appear in court at 09:00 local time on Wednesday (23:00 UTC on Tuesday) and plead guilty to accusations of leaking “documents, writings and notes related to national defense, including materials considered secret.

The appearance will be in the Mariana Islands due to Assange’s opposition to traveling to the continental United States and the court’s proximity to Australia, according to a letter from the US Department of Justice sent to the court.

There the Prosecutor’s Office will request a sentence of 62 months in prison, equivalent to the time he has already served in the Belmarsh high security prison (United Kingdom).
