The history of Cuevas Castle begins in the 70s, when Serafín VillaránVocation architect but not training, decided to build its own medieval strength in Cebolleros, a municipality of Burgos of just 200 inhabitants. Specifically, this construction began in 1978 in 1978 on the basis of two old wineries, taking advantage of their free time, on vacation and weekends. And with a will and patience, he managed to lift a five -storey castle and 300 square meters.
Serafín Villarán had no academic training in art or architecture, but his work transmits an intensity that overflows the limits of the amateur. As Other self -taught artists that have transformed their spaces -from the ideal palace of Ferdinand Cheval in France to the Cathedral of Justo Gallego in improved field -, Serafín worked moved by an internal vision, not by fame or recognition.


A contemporary medieval castle
Mainly built with stones and shot songs extracted from the nearby Nela and Trueba River to lower costs, Villarán learned on the march and raised this unique castle for about 20 years of his life where there is no lack of passages, battlements, towers, snail stairs and even a chimney inside. After their death, in 1998, their relatives decided to continue its construction and, in addition, open it to the public, offering free visits to the complex.
The castle presents an architecture that emulates the old medieval strengths, with an imposing entrance gate and crenellated towers. The structure rises on four floors and a basement, offering a tour of the curious to appreciate its architectural details. In a small museum you can also know the history of its construction.

For many years, the Cuevas Castle It was a rarity barely known outside the region. But in recent times, thanks to the Internet and social networks, it has been gaining attention as a curious and unique destination.
Currently, you can visit mainly during the summer, as well as during the festive bridges throughout the year. In addition to touring the building, Serafín’s family has enabled a bar inside the castle and visits do not have a fixed cost, although donations are accepted for the maintenance and completion of the work.
