The strike and the accompanying demonstration ended with a bloody collision with the police. In July 1889, the Paris Congress of the II International, in memory of the performance of the workers of Chicago, decided to hold annual demonstrations on May 1.

For a long time, May Day was a symbol of the revolution, an irreconcilable class struggle, had a “political coloring” and was marked by demonstrations decorated with portraits of political figures, leaders of production, slogans, calls, posters and diagrams about achievements in a particular industry of the national economy, science, and culture. But gradually this context was lost.

The first military parade during the years of Soviet power took place on May 1, 1918 on the Khodynsky field in Moscow. The troops of the Moscow garrison took part and attended by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, Nadezhda Konstantinovna Krupskaya, Maria Ilyinichna Ulyanova.
