kyiv (EFE) .- The Ukrainian President, Volodimir Zelenski, said Saturday that at his last meeting with the US President, Donald Trump, on the occasion of Pope Francis’s funeral, on April 26, the two approached the possibility of imposing additional sanctions against Russia.
“I think I had the best conversation with President Trump of all we have had so far,” Zelenski said in a meeting with the press in kyiv, in statements cited by the UKRinform agency.
«I raised the question of American sanctions. I will not go into details, but what he told me (Trump) sounded very powerful, ”he said.
Controversial economic agreement with the US
Zelenski also answered questions regarding the controversial economic agreement between the US and Ukraine signed this week, which must still be ratified by the supreme or parliament in the next few days.
The Ukrainian President expressed the expectation that there are no difficulties to approve the document, although he admitted that there are Ukrainian deputies who oppose, to those who claimed to reject an agreement “on which Ukraine security depends.”
Zelenski said that based on the decisions taken by the US Congress, Ukraine should receive this year a value of 15,000 million dollars and another similar sum in 2026.
The agreement signed with Washington could allow the reception of the 15,000 years scheduled for 2026 to be advanced to this year, he said, as part of the US contribution to the investment fund for reconstruction that will be established as part of the treatment.
ZELENSKI: Useless three -day truce announced by Moscow
Zelenski has insisted on the need for a high fire of at least 30 days and has pointed out that the 72 -hour truce declared by Moscow around the festivities for the end of World War II is useless, since time is not enough to undertake peace negotiations.
«Let’s try a 30 -day fire. Why a high 30 -day fire? Because it is impossible to agree on three, five or seven days, ”he said in a meeting with the press in kyiv in statements cited this Saturday by the Ukrinform agency.
That is why Truce announced by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, is rather a theatrical gesture, designed to enjoy a quiet atmosphere in Moscow on May 9 to receive foreign dignitaries, he said.
According to Zelenski, this implies that the Russians “kill you until 7 (May), have two or three comfortable days and the 11 attack you again with missiles.”
On the contrary, if a truce endures for 30 days, kyiv may trust that Moscow “is ready for the next steps,” he said.
As for the difficulties posed by monitoring a high fire, Zelenski acknowledged that a total truce cannot be achieved without a “high quality” supervision, but still asked to try if there is will.
