The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, said this Saturday that she rejected an offer from her US counterpart, Donald Trump, to send US military to fight drug cartels in Mexican territory.
during the inauguration of a public university in Texcoco, Sheinbaum confirmed a report by Wall Street Journal that Trump had made the offer, saying that he was mentioned during “some of the calls” that both have shared since the Republican returned to the White House in January.
“He said: ‘How can we help them fight drug trafficking? I propose that the US Army come to help them.
“It is not necessary; we can collaborate, we can work together, but you in your territory, and we in ours. We can share information, but we will never accept the presence of the US army in our territory.”
CNN has contacted the White House to obtain comments.
Sheinbaum has previously adopted a firm position on what he considers foreign interference in Mexican affairs. He has also advocated keeping “the cold head” in the negotiations with Washington, amid tensions about immigration, drug trafficking and American tariffs on Mexican products.
