Victory Day truce enters into force for 72 hours from May 8 in Russia

From the 12th of May 8, in Russia a 72 -hour truce will be applied, which will run until midnight on May 11, recalled the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, María Zajárova. Previously, this initiative was announced by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day against Nazi Germany.“At midnight from May 7 to 8, a 72 -hour truce will to be governed on the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of La Victoria, which was announced by the president of Russia,” said the spokeswoman.

Putin aims to guarantee the security of commemorative acts, in which he plans to bring together more than 20 leaders from countries such as China, , Slovakia, Cuba, among others. After the announcement, Ukraine and the United States expressed their support for a cessation of hostilities, but proposed that it be undefined instead of temporal.

According to the Russian presidency, Putin made this decision “for humanitarian reasons” and as a way of honoring the 80th anniversary of the triumph over Nazism. The statement emphasizes that the measure was adopted at the initiative of the president himself, in his role as commander of the Armed Forces.

“Russia considers that the Ukrainian part must follow this example,” added the text, in which it is warned that if Ukraine breaches the truce, “the Russian armed forces will give an adequate and effective response.” As explained by President’s spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, this statement is an act of faith for possible negotiations.
