Miami – La Inter -American press Society (SIP) strongly condemns the murder of the journalist Raúl Celis López, The second crime of this type registered in Peru so far this year. The organization urges the Peruvian authorities to carry out an exhaustive and urgent investigation to identify, judge and sanction those responsible.
The attack occurred this morning, around the 5:50 a. m., when Celis López, a journalist of Radio Karibeña in Iquitos, was heading in Mototaxi to the station with her son to conduct her “Zero Time” program. Unidentified subjects, who were traveling on a motorcycle, intercepted him and shot him three times, one of them in his head, according to local media. His son was unharmed.
José Roberto Dutriz, president of the SIP, CEO and general director of the graphic press of El Salvador, expressed his solidarity with the family and colleagues of the murdered journalist. “We deeply alarm the resurgence of violence against journalists in Peru. We exhort the authorities to fulfill their duty to clarify this crime and guarantee justice so that facts like this are not unpunished,” he said.
-This murder joins that of Gastón Medina, director of Cadena Sur TV, who was killed on January 20 in front of his home in the city of Ica when he was about to go to his study. The crime is still not clarified.
Martha Ramos, president of the Press and Information Commission of the SIP and editorial director of the Mexican Editorial Organization (OEM), highlighted the need to combat impunity. “When the murder of a journalist is without punishment, a message of permissiveness is sent that encourages new attacks. The State must act firmly to protect the informative work and integrity of those who exercise it,” he said.
Celis López was widely known for his critical and frontal style, and stood out for his complaints about corruption, extortion and crime in the region. According to the local press, I would not have received threats before the attack.
