“Donald Trump, it’s time to fight on behalf of the light, in the name of light.” Thus says the catchy chorus of the song … That at the rhythm of rock has launched the great rabbi of Ukraine, Moshe Azman, to request support from the US President. The video of the influential religious leader, firm detractor of Russia, sweeps these days on social networks for its harangues to the chief of the White House that intermingle with images of bombing and destruction and pain caused by the invasion.
The clip has been published after more than two months of fruitless mediation in the United States to end more than three years of conflict between Russia and Ukraine. But Trump’s pressure is not taking effect and hostilities continue, as evidenced by the Russian attack against kyiv last week, the worst in months against the Ukrainian capital, where 13 people died.
Azman explained that it was that attack against kyiv who inspired him to give life to the song. He was enough “a few hours” after visiting one of the places beaten by the bombs to write the letter, according to the France press agency. The rabbi ensures that he felt deeply moved to see “the dead, the injured and much destruction.” “With music, we can say things that cannot be expressed with words,” he says.
The great rabbi explains that he challenges Trump as “the most powerful man in the world” to make him “open his eyes to what happens” in Ukraine. «You are the only one, the world looks at you. At every step, in everything you do (…) Do not let the lines be diluted between good and evil, ”he sings in his video clip. His hope is that the president sees the video although, for the moment, the White House has not responded to his pleas.
Like many Ukrainians, Moshe Azman has had to deal with the loss of loved ones in this war. In September last year, one of his adoptive children died in combat against Russia. His open position against Kremlin has caused the wrath of the great rabbi of Russia, Berel Lazar, a firm follower of Putin. In Azman’s song, all in English, the Russian president does not stop well. “The Tarrone of the Tsar is erected about fear and hate (…) They don’t want peace, they just want blood and fire,” he sings.
Ukraine hosts one of the most populous Jewish communities in Europe. President Volodimir Zelenski himself is of Jewish origin, although not practicing. In 2023, 45,000 Jews lived in this ancient Soviet Republic. The figure was even higher before the Russian invasion, initiated in February 2022.
From his return to the White House, Trump has launched favorable statements to Moscow and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. These comments generate concern among Ukrainians, who fear being forced to accept unfair concessions. Accused of approaching the Kremlin, the US president also expressed in recent days his frustration towards the head of the Kremlin, who urged to stop mortal attacks against Ukraine with his remembered “Vladimir, hold”.
