From the beginning of the campaign “Yes to disarmament, yes to peace” on January 10, Mexico has reported advances in the reduction of firearms in circulation
Until now, more than 1,550 weapons have been delivered by citizens voluntarily and anonymously, thanks to the collaboration of various institutions, as reported by the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez.
Through this initiative, which offers cash to those who deliver their weapons, 1,017 short weapons, 405 long and 128 grenades have been collected, in addition to a large number of cartridges and loaders.
Among the weapons delivered, semi -automatic rifles such as AR15 and AK47 are included, as well as sub -meter, a sample of the type of weapons that will no longer be in circulation.
The campaign has the support of the Catholic Church and the Ministry of National Defense, who have facilitated the establishment of exchange modules in seven states of the country
In addition, the scope has been extended to include modules in the Cathedral of Puebla, which will be available from next Wednesday. Iad of weapons and ammunition.
The plan is not only limited to disarmament, but also includes activities for boys and girls, who can change their war toys for more educational ones.
More than 3,600 toys have been exchanged so far, contributing to raise awareness of peace from an early age, according to what was reported
A study published in 2025 by the Seminar on Violence and Peace of the College of Mexico, points out that in August 2019, the then Secretary of Defense, Luis Cresencio Sandoval, estimated that there were more than 2 million illegal weapons in the country.
Considering the estimated annual flow of 200,000 illegal weapons that enter Mexico from the United States (according to the complaint of the Mexican Foreign Ministry), the study authors estimate that by 2024 this figure could have increased to approximately 3.9 million illegal weapons.
The 1,500 firearms recovered by the SEGOB represent only 0.0385% of the 3.9 million illegal weapons estimated circulating in the country
