After the action on the track around Hard Rock Stadium, the Miami Grand Prix had its end in the Commissioners’ room, since Red Bull Racing decided to protest the results of the race, and more specifically against George Russell.
The FIA document, the so -called citation, established that the representatives of Red Bull and Mercedes had to appear before the commissioners at 19:15, local time, due to an alleged violation of Appendix H (article 2.5.5b) of the International Sports Code. This is the breach of the yellow flags, something that Max Verstappen immediately communicated by radio: “Check if George has raised his foot from the accelerator, there was a yellow flag.”
Christian Horner explained the reason for the protest shortly after during his press session with Motorsport.com And other media in the paddock: “As we have probably seen, we have registered a protest to the FIA in relation to George Russell, which from the GPS can see quite clearly, while raising (during the VSC), it did not reduce the speed, and the regulation is quite explicitly clear that there has to be a reduction of speed, so the car has continued to accelerate, only that at a slow I would normally do, there is no real reduction in speed. “
However, after both parties gave their version of the events, the commissioners decided to reject the protest. Russell thus maintains his position on the podium and Verstappen is finally classified as a fourth.
The FIA document states: “From the images on board and telemetry, it was observed that car pilot 63 lifted the accelerator approximately 25 % and, therefore, the acceleration was reduced approximately 30 %. Article 26.1.a) demands that the pilot significantly reduce the speed in a yellow flag area, but does not specify if the absolute speed should reduce or if it should reduce the speed with respect to the speed with respect to the speed of the speed in the corresponding section of the track “.
The commissioners on duty (Felix Holter, Mathieu Remerie, Derek Warwick and Steve Pence) clarify that the first thing happened and the second does not: “The speed of car 63 in the yellow flag area was significantly lower than the regular race speed, but the absolute speed increased slightly when the yellow flag passed.”
Red Bull considers that the latter is a violation, but the commissioners do not. According to them, reducing the speed with respect to the usual race speed is sufficient for Russell not to be penalized and maintain third place. The commissioners coincide with Mercedes’s defense in this regard, since Ron Meadows and George Russell have argued that maintaining a slower speed that in other laps should be sufficient.
