From April 9 to 11, the Faculty of human Medicine of the university of Piura received the official visit of the evaluators of the Mexican Council for the accreditation of Medical Education (COMAEM), as part of the ongoing international accreditation process of the Professional school of Human Medicine.

This visit represented the second stage of the external evaluation process, which began with an exhaustive documentary review and virtual interviews conducted at the end of March 2025. During the face -to -face visit, the evaluators toured the campus facilities, reviewed documents, held meetings with teachers, students and university authorities, and visited the clinical headquarters of the Naval Medical Center “Senior Surgeon Santiago Távara” and the Santa Rosa Hospital. The objective was to contrast the information contained in the Self -Assessment Report, presented by the Faculty, with the operational reality of the academic program, through a direct and participatory observation.
The Comaem team was made up of Dr. Alfredo Ham Nolasco (Veracruzana University), Dr. Josué Cambros Barraza (Autonomous University of Sinaloa) and Dr. Sergio Trujillo López (University of Sonora). His participation allowed establishing a valuable academic dialogue that reinforces the vision of continuous improvement.
“Accreditation is an opportunity to humble our processes with humility, identify opportunities for improvement and grow with a critical and constructive vision,” said Dr. Jorge Zagaceta Guevara, dean of the Faculty, at the welcome ceremony. In turn, he stressed that this visit consolidates the University’s commitment to a medical training of excellence, focused on both technical and human.
For her part, the Vice Chancellor of the Lima Campus, Dr. María Pía Chirinos, remarked that “this visit is a pride for the University of Piura, because it represents the ambition of doing things well and reaching global standards.”
From Comaem, the Dr. Ham Nolasco coordinator shared a message of encouragement: “They have a young school, but great in spirit. This visit is not punitive, it is a path to constant improvement, to form doctors who transcend borders.”
Obtain this accreditation, which has the international guarantee of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME)will mean for the Faculty of Human Medicine a support for the quality of its curriculum, its teaching body, its infrastructure and the results of its graduates. For students, it translates into greater employability opportunities and validated training by global standards.
This accreditation process represents a firm step towards medical education aimed at positively impacting the country’s health system, forming professionals prepared to assume both local and international challenges, in line with the mission and institutional ideology.
After the face -to -face visit, the Faculty continues to be immersed in the accreditation process, waiting for the final opinion by Comaem and with projection towards the monitoring stage, thus reaffirming its sustained commitment to educational quality, continuous improvement and institutional excellence.
