This feature film originates the last and most recent encounter between Scorsese and Pope Francis after the filmmaker’s return to his hometown in Sicily. It seeks to merge audiovisual creation with the education and strengthening of the community.
For the expert, this project will allow its participants to prepare short films from scripts that reflect and celebrate their unique identities, stories and values. In addition, he will have the details of the most intimate conversations between the religious leader and the renowned director.
In statements prior to his death, Pope Francis highlighted the importance of this project: “It is an extremely poetic and very constructive project because it goes to the roots of what human life, human society, human conflicts … the essence of the trip of a life is going.”
For his part, Scorsese, recognized by the background of his projects, emphasized the importance of intercultural dialogue in this film:
“Now more than ever we need to talk to each other, listen to us interculturally. One of the best ways to achieve it is to share the stories of who we are, reflected in our personal lives and experiences. It helps us value and understand how each of us sees the world,” he confessed.
The filmmaker also referred to Pope Francis’s vision of the project: “For him, it was important that people around the world exchange ideas with respect and at the same time preserve their cultural identity. And cinema is the best means to do so.”
Both the documentary and the Occurrent Scholas Organization are funded independently and its donors are international, so that the profits are only used in the growth of this project.
Although they have not announced the official date of its premiere, this important audiovisual project is led by Clare Tavernor and Johnny Shipley, while production is from Scholas Films villages in association with Sikelia Productions and Massive Owl Productions.
“It was, in every way, an extraordinary human being. He recognized his own defects. It radiated wisdom and goodness and had a iron commitment to good. He hugged, preached and practiced universal and constant forgiveness,” said Scorsese to the magazine Variety.
Other countries such as Indonesia, Gambia and Italy are among the former who joined this innovative initiative, with their short films that will be presented in local movie theaters, taking these stories to their own communities.
