The president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, said Saturday that during his recent meeting with former US president Donald Trump, they approached the possibility of imposing new sanctions against Russia. The meeting took place on April 26 in the framework of Pope Francis’s funeral in Rome.
“I think I had the best conversation with President Trump of all we have had so far,” Zelenski said in kyiv, according to the agency Ukrinform. “I raised the question of American sanctions. I will not go into details, but what he said sounded very powerful,” he added, leaving open the possibility of a hardening of economic measures against Moscow.
In addition, the president referred to the recent and controversial economic agreement between the United States and Ukraine, which must still be approved by the Ukrainian Parliament. Despite the resistance of some legislators, Zelenski was confident that it will be ratified: “It is an agreement on which Ukraine security depends,” he said.

According to the Head of State, the agreement includes 15,000 million dollars of aid in 2025 and a similar figure by 2026, although part of that money could be advanced this year as a contribution to the investment fund for reconstruction.
Zelenski also dismissed the 72 -hour truce announced by Russia on the occasion of the anniversary of the end of World War II. “It is impossible to agree anything in three days. Let’s try a high 30 -day fire,” he asked. For the Ukrainian president, Putin’s gesture is merely symbolic: “They kill you until May 7, they have two or three calm days and 11 attack again.”
Despite recognizing the difficulties of controlling a high effective fire, Zelenski urged to advance with political will: “It cannot be achieved without high quality supervision, but we must try.”
