There were no shouts, but a lot of bottom tension. The first meeting between the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carly, developed in a more cordial atmosphere than expected, but made it clear that the relationship between the two countries lives its worst moment in decades.
- Disagreements on tariffs, the commercial relationship and the interest of the Republican in annexing the neighboring country were exposed in this meeting. A reminder: USA maintains 25% tariffs on Canadian key products.
- Carney settled the question of Canadian sovereignty ensuring that “Canada is not for sale, and will never be.”
- Trump replied: “Never say.”
What do Canadian citizens think? Only 9% would support the annexation to the US.
-- This situation has benefited Carney, who succeeded in the elections of a week ago in Canada thanks to the abrupt anti-trump.
And now what? Both leaders have spoken several times by phone and will continue to negotiate. But Carney’s message is clear: the idyllic relationship between the two countries is over.
