Madrid, May 8 (EFE) .- Workers of the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport urge the Government, the Community and the Madrid City Council to set aside “the political battle” and collaborate to offer a solution to the five hundred homeless people who live in the airfield.
The delegate of Union Alternative AENA/ENAIRE (ASAE) and nurse of the Airport Medical Service, Alexia Font, points out that the homeless people who live at the airport represent “a problem of security, health, hygiene and image of the country.”
Workers who have suffered insect bites at Terminal 4 relate this problem to the conditions of lack of hygiene of an important group of these people living in the airport, although “not all are the same,” explains Font.
“When a person with a lack of hygiene, with a sleeping bag or a mattress, gets under a billing counter, it is normal for the worker to feel in a upholstered chair can be affected by it. I do not think anyone brought the bed bugs of his house,” he says.
Among the people who sleep at the airport, he explains, there are different situations, from those with precarious jobs that cannot pay a rental room and spend the night there because they have a bath and meter, among other services, even asylum seekers and people with drug addiction problems, mental illnesses or other pathologies.
After regretting “the political battle” between the City Council of Madrid, the Government and Aena, it calls on the administrations to collaborate to solve the security problems at the airport and stop the increase in crime, the robberies, the aggressions and the prostitution.
Fernanda Correia, representative of use-Madrid, worker of the company in charge of cleaning in Barajas, states that all terminals are affected by the presence of homeless.
Some of them, with precarious works, only spend the night at the airport, while others remain in the facilities twenty -four hours a day, he adds.
The biggest problem occurs at night, says Correia. Aena has relocated homeless people in areas with less influx of travelers. Every day between 04:15 and 04:30 a protocol established by AENA is activated for cleaning these areas, which implies the intervention of security guards, cleaning personnel and an intermediate command.
“Some people are reasonable, they understand it perfectly, they get up, allow them to be cleaned and replaced, but other people are angry, insult and aggregate,” says Correia.
Ask Aen to seek formulas of collaboration with the Madrid City Council, after highlighting that cleaning workers cannot fulfill their task “with the fear that at any time they can be attacked by people who have the withdrawal or that wearing weapons, guns or sharp objects. Efe.
