The Russian presidents, Vladimir Putin, and Chino, Xi Jinping, launched this Thursday (08.05.2025) a serious warning to the United States with a strategic statement in which they condemned both their containment policy, as well as the expansion of NATO in Europe and Asia, and the commercial barriers imposed by the US president, Donald Trump.
During their meeting at the Kremlin, Putin and XI said that their alliance, which they defined as a “stabilizer factor” in times of geopolitical uncertainty, is not directed against any country.
The visit of the Chinese leader to Russia on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Red Army over Nazi Germany in world war II was a demonstration that, despite the recent approach with Putin, Trump has not been able to put a wedge between the two countries.
Of course, there was space for the calls to give up the western mentality of blocks of the Cold War, to oppose the rehabilitation of Nazism and adapt international architecture to the realities of the 21st century, so that they reflect the balance of forces among all members of the world community.
Double containment policy
Putin and XI, who started their summit in the morning and finished it seven hours later between tea cups, approved two political statements that reflected the tensions between the Moscow-Pekín axis and the one formed by Washington and Brussels.
The parties “intend to expand cooperation and strengthen coordination in order to firmly counteract the ‘double containment’ policy of Russia and China,” says the document, which criticized the antimile system Iron dome and warned of the risk of a nuclear conflict.
Chinese concerns about the expansion of NATO in Asia-Pacific were reflected in the text, in which both leaders consider such an “extremely negative aspect for peace, stability and prosperity of the region.”
In this regard, they assured that US plans and the United Kingdom to create a military infrastructure in Australia (in allusion to the Aukus tripartite alliance) only “will cause an arms race in the region.”
Putin and XI warned that the expansion of some nuclear powers that display short and medium reach missiles away from their territory, in clear allusion to the US, threaten the fundamental interests of other countries that also have strategic arsenal, as is the case of Russia and China.
Diatribe against commercial barriers
In a clear warning to Trump, Russia and China denounced “unfair” commercial tariffs, unfair competition, protectionist measures and unilateral sanctions.
“The introduction of unjustified tariffs by certain states towards its commercial partners goes against the rights and interests of other states and the World Trade Organization, (…) which threatens world stability,” he says.
-In his opinion, these “discriminatory” measures negatively influence the world economy and food and energy security.
Precisely, the United States and China will meet this weekend for an official first meeting after the start of the new commercial war in which the rates were raised to 145 % by Trump’s decision.
Regarding the freezing of assets, of which Russia is now, they defend the right to take response measures under international law.
In contrast, Russia and China today signed an investment promotion and protection agreement, which Putin estimated at 200,000 million dollars, which would raise the total money invested in joint projects to a billion, according to Kremlin.
Putin also welcomed Chinese car manufacturers and microprocessors, and promised that Gazprom will meet Chinese gas needs even above the top marked by bilateral contracts.
Iran and Ukraine, parallel worlds
The peaceful solution of international crises varies according to the country involved. In the case of Iran they called to solve the nuclear problem based on the non -proliferation treaty, but also of the peaceful use of atomic energy.
Of course, that peaceful solution must take into account the reasonable concerns of all participants in the process.
Meanwhile, the declaration defends the concept of indivisible security -a country cannot guarantee its security at the expense of another -, an argument wielded by Russia to defend its military campaign in Ukraine, which aspired to enter NATO.
In fact, Russia also praised in the joint document the objective and impartial position and the constructive role played by Beijing, which the Ukrainian President, Volodimir Zelenski, recently accused of sending troops and military teams to Russia.
Taking advantage of the presence in Moscow of the leaders of Brazil, Venezuela and Cuba, praised the will of Latin American countries towards mutually beneficial cooperation and were willing to increase contacts with regional organizations.
