The reform works of the municipal shelter for homeless people, located in the Macías Rete de Cádiz square, advance to 60% of its execution. The project includes an investment of 400,000 euros with VAT included, financed with own funds from the City of Cádiz.
The intervention includes the provision of an adequate ventilation system, the complete substitution of the exterior carpentry to prevent the entry of cold, the installation of solar panels for hot water with the aim of improving the energy efficiency and the coating of the facade. Electrical installation, plumbing and sanitation system are also being renewed. In addition, interior carpentry is modified so that it is more moisture resistant and bathrooms, kitchen and bedrooms are being improving.
The mayor of Cádiz, Bruno García, visited the building this week and said that “the reform of the municipal shelter was one of the main objectives of our government team, with which we will improve and modernize facilities that must be up to the dignity of the people to whom it is served.”
Bruno García stressed that “this reform was an urgent need, since the shelter presented unfortunate conditions after recent years without interventions that maintained the quality of the service.” He added that “it is not just about renewing a building, but about transforming a homeless care system, allowing more resources and better services.”
In this regard, he mentioned projects such as the start -up of the Center on Setenil de las Bodegas street, assigned by Procasa, and the construction of the new center on Solitude Street, which is being executed in a municipal land with a subsidy approved by the Junta de Andalucía.
He also indicated that with these initiatives, together with the increase in alternative pension accommodation by 60% compared to 2022, Cádiz will have more than 80 decent places for homeless, compared to the 20 existing ones a few years ago.
