With the aim of promoting a call to action to promote Health and well -being of women and their newborns In the long term, different actors who make life in the field of Venezuelan public health gathered in a forum that made the Pan American Health Organization.
It will be the beginning of a series of events to position in society the issue of maternal and neonatal health and the importance of reducing maternal mortality rates, within the framework of a campaign that started on April 7, World Health Dayand that will run for a whole year.
Armando de Negri, Interim representative of the PAHO, opened the forum celebrating that the topic chosen this year to celebrate the World Health Day was maternal and neonatal health, and recalled that maternal deaths are related to the fragility of health systems. In that sense, he recalled the call of the PAHO director, Jarbas Barbosa, to work for the goal of zero maternal deaths avoidable in the region of the Americas.
A topic to position
Enrique Vallés, ACNUR representative and who attended in the name of the resident coordinator’s office, recalled that health, seen as something that goes beyond the absence of illness, is a global commitment to the United Nations, and that the maternal health eIn particular, it is one of its most important agendas, so any effort to position this issue in society is welcome.
In the forum he also participated remotely Bremen of Mucius, Regional OPS Advisor in Maternal Health, who recalled that since 2016, OPS works on a strategy to end up preventable maternal mortality that not only speaks of “surviving” but also of “prospering and transforming”. He said that maternal mortality rates are today “inadmissibly high” throughout the continent.
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Society of VenezueA was represented in the panel by its president -elect, Juan Andrés Pérez Wolffwho highlighted the efforts that it makes in training issues for health personnel since the year. On the part of International Medical Corps the rapporteur was Marly Quintana, Health Manager, and by UN Women spoke Náhury Escalona, Specialist in gender -based violence.
After an open conversation among all participants, the forum was closed by De Negri, who informed that it would be the beginning of a sequence of activities where many topics that arose in this first event can be addressed, always with the view set in the goal of gathering efforts in favor of maternal and neonatal health.
