New York, APR 14 (EFE) .- Donald Trump’s administration decided on Monday to freeze 2.2 billion dollars in federal funds for Harvard university after the institution rejected the government’s demand to put its diversity programs in order and monitor the ideological orientation of its foreign students and after being accused of not doing enough to combat anti-Semitism in its campus.
The announcement puts 9,000 million dollars at risk in federal subsidies, under the argument that it has allowed anti -Semitism without control to flourish.
“No government should dictate what a private university can teach, or who should admit or hire, or what areas of study or research can be pursued,” said Harvard president Alan Garber, in a note to the members of the University.
Harvard University assured the Trump administration on Monday that it will continue to fight anti -Semitism in its campus as it has claimed but will not accept its demands to avoid the cut of funds, which “invade university freedoms recognized for a long time by the Supreme Court.”
University Lawyers today sent a letter to the members of the “Federal Working group to combat anti -Semitism”, created by President Donald Trump through executive order, in which they describe the University is willing to eradicate anti -Semitism but “is not prepared to accept demands that go beyond the legal authority of any administration.”
Harvard is the second white university of this group, which had already cut – with the same pretext – 400 million dollars to the University of Columbia, after which this center accepted a series of government requirements so as not to lose financing.
Within its efforts to combat anti -Semitism, the university “has made and will continue to make structural, political and programmatic durable and solid changes to ensure that the university is a cozy and support learning environment for all students,” says the letter. EFE
