A Commemorative sculpture of the centenary of the first military landing in Gando It looks already on the maritime avenue of the Air basenext to the officers’ pavilion. The work, prepared by the engineer sculptor Alberto Viera Salgadowas delivered this Friday by the City Council of the Villa de Ingenioin an institutional act that was attended by civil and military authorities.
The mayor, Vanesa Martínheaded the municipal delegation, being received by the Colonel Bayardo Abóshead of the Gando Air Base. In her words, the governor highlighted the symbolic value of the work and the historical connection between the base, the commemorable fact and the Canarian society.
«That this work serves as a symbol of recognition and respect for the work carried out by the Air and space Army in close relationship with the Canarian society. As a municipality, we are proud to contribute, through the talent of one of our artists, a piece that will remain as a sign of that connection between art and history, between civil and the military, between the town of Ingenio and this base, ”Martin said.
For its part, the Councilor for Culture, Sebastián Suárezhe underlined the meaning of this delivery as a gesture of institutional and affective proximity. “This is just a detail that from the Department of Culture we wanted to have with the base, which for us is much more,” he said, referring to different activities that have linked both entities in recent years. «With this act, simple but beautiful, we want to strengthen our people’s commitment to our base. Through Alberto’s hands we decided to make a sculpture and donate it so that a piece of ingenuity is now even closer, narrowing bonds, ”he added.
Two meters high on a rock
The sculptor Alberto Viera explained that his inspiration started directly from the commemorable fact. “I was based on what happened that day,” he said, while highlighting the technical and symbolic elements that make up the work.
The colonel Bayardo AbóS, on the other hand, after thanking the donation, valued the location of the work within the enclosure. «It is found in one of the most busy base sitesa worthy place for the sculpture that gives us, to give visibility, ”he said.
The head of the Air Base also talked about the Historical Brotherhood between military and citizenshipalso recalling the mission of the base to protect and monitor the Airspartic space of the Canary Islands, but also to act in rescue and rescue tasks. The sculpture, two meters high by three widepresents a three -dimensional design fully integrated into its environment, offering a multilateral appreciation from different perspectives. It stands On a solid rock base, symbolizing the earthly connection with the historic landing of 1924.
An aerial feat
In the upper section, they stand out A propeller and three branches Turquoise blue – color of heaven – representing the leading aircraft of the event: “Canarian archipelago”, “Tenerife” and “Gran Canaria”. These convergent forms look at a central point where the engine is represented, a visual metaphor of technological progress and human ingenuity that made the aerial feat possible.
The work uses Mixed materials – Hierro, cork and textured mortar– They give it a tactile quality and a robust symbolic burden, reflecting the combination between art, history and territory. In the central part of the rock you can read the registration: «For those who are, those who were and those who were, ensuring our community for a hundred years in a world of peace for the 100th anniversary.»
