The U party quoted its bench in the house of Representatives to a key meeting that will take place on Wednesday, May 7 at noon at the main headquarters of the community in Bogotá.

In the call sent to the congressmen, it is expressly indicated that the “candidate for the U party to the presidency of the 2025-2026 period” will be chosen. According to information obtained by WeekThe representatives Jorge Eliécer Tamayo and Julián David López are the ones who sound as possible postulates, although inside the party there is a growing consensus that would favor the first.
This decision arises in the midst of a political environment rarefied by the lack of compliance with the agreements between the chamber benches. These commitments were established since the beginning of the current legislative four -year period to distribute the presidencies of the Corporation, according to the political representation of the different sectors.
Although radical change was expected to assume the presidency in the fourth year, as part of these pacts, government sectors have shown interest in modifying what was agreed to favor a political ally in the July 20 election. This possibility has aroused concerns and rearrangements within the Congress.
In response to this scenario, both the U party and the conservative party would be preparing their own candidacies. In the case of conservatives, several of its members have strengthened ties with the Executive, including representative Juan Carlos Wills, who recently expressed his support for government initiatives, such as popular consultation.
“Citizen participation is the soul of democracy. The Senate must soon decide on popular consultation, thinking about institutional strengthening. Listening to the people, opening spaces for dialogue and strengthening their voice is the way to build a more fair and united country,” he said.
On the other hand, there are versions that indicate a possible understanding between radical change and the government around the composition of the national Electoral Council (CNE). This, due to the recent resignation of former Magistrate César Lorduy, who represented that match, and his replacement for Álvaro Echeverry, a figure close to the house of Nariño. It should be remembered that in the CNE currently studies an investigation into the 2022 presidential campaign.
This context has led the U party to seek prominence in the dispute over the presidency of the Chamber. If the application of Jorge Eliécer Tamayo is completed, the party would reinforce its commitment to influence the direction of the Corporation in a crucial year, while the debate on compliance with the legislative agreements signed at the beginning of the four -year period continues.
The decision of the U bench will be decisive in the political configuration of the coming months in Congress, especially in the middle of the tension environment between traditional parties and the national government.
