A fire in a house in Mastic charged a man’s life this Monday afternoon and left three other hospitalized people, including a couple of older adults and a firefighter.
According to a state police statement from Suffolk, the conflagration was reported around 6:40 in the afternoon, in a house located at 67 of Overlook Drive. When emergency equipment arrived, the residence was already wrapped in flames.
Two of the housing occupants, identified as John and Maryann Gaeta, 80 and 81 respectively, managed to escape, but his son, Frank Gaeta, 56, was found lifeless on the rear terrace of the building, according to the police report.
-Both John and Maryann were transferred to the Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated by smoke inhalation. An cash from the MASTIC Fire Department was also injured by burns during the work to control the fire and was taken to a medical center to receive attention.
Suffolk County Police reported that detectives from the Homicide Brigade and the premeditated fire section are investigating the case. Although the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, the authorities indicated that, for the moment, it does not seem to be a criminal act.
The research continues to clarify how the fire originated and confirm the circumstances of the tragedy.
