Peru, a seismically active country, has registered 313 earthquakes between 3.5 and 5.4 so far from 2025 (January-6), according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (PGI) through its National Seismological Center (Censis).
According to Hernando Tavera (PGI), earthquakes have been recorded daily: 76 in January, 79 in February, 81 in March, 61 in April and 16 until May 7. The censis, through its 75 seismic stations distributed strategically nationwide, monitor these events in real time, providing crucial data for disaster risk management.
The censis issues immediate, crucial seismic reports for a quick emergency response. These reports are sent to INDECI to coordinate the prevention and the direction of hydrography of the Navy in case of tsunami risk. In addition, the information is publicly accessible through the digital platforms of the PGI and Minam.
In 2024, the PGI reported 798 earthquakes, while in 2023 they were 764. Through this constant and detailed monitoring, the PGI plays a fundamental role in disaster prevention and in the protection of the population in the face of seismic activity in the country. The infrastructure and training of the censis team position Peru as one of the best prepared countries in Latin America to face these natural events.
