Institutional acts, concerts, awards ceremony and a clear message: Europe is also built from local. Catalonia turns this May 9 with activities distributed throughout the territory, with Barcelona at the head, which will lead the commemoration for Europe’s day with a great concentration that will bring together almost seventy entities attached under the same motto: “For a united and democratic Europe.” The act, convened at six o’clock this Friday before the Cathedral of Barcelona, has the organization of the Consell Català del Movimimento Europeu. Next to the act, a manifesto calls for the mobilization “in defense of the European common project. Under the slogan “per una united and democratic”, concentration will seek to be a space of “firm defense of the values that have advanced to Europe”, among which “human rights, social justice and equality”, among others.
Although most of the activities are concentrated during the morning, from today until Sunday there will be activities distributed throughout the territory that will seek to commemorate Europe’s Day, the forty anniversary of the first Schengen agreement and the 75 years of the Schuman statement, presented in 1950 and that sat the basis of the European Union as we know it.
During the day today, the City of Lleida has initiated the celebration of Europe Day with an act that has told an interpretation of the hymn of Europe and with the presence of the European Union minister and External Action of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Jaume Duch. For its part, the City Council of Girona has organized activities throughout the week, with an institutional central act convened for tomorrow at 18:30. The Tarragona City Council has opted to diversify its activities throughout the month of May with talks, exhibitions and a simulation of the European Parliament, among others.
In Barcelona, the commemorative activities of Europe’s Day begin this afternoon with an event at the Center of Culture I Memòria. The Italian minister, Enrico Letta, will present his new book in a debate on the future of Europe that will be attended by the mayor, Jaume Collboni, followed by a symphonic concert.
Friday’s day will be marked by five main events. The first will begin at 9:00 at the Cotxeres Civic Center in Sants, where 600 students from the ambassadors of the European Parliament in Catalonia will meet to celebrate Europe. President Salvador Illa will join this meeting at 11:30.
-The second act of the morning will begin at 9:30 in Sant Jaume square and will be attended by the chief of the Catalan government executive, Salvador Illa, the mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, and other authorities. During this event, speeches will be held and the commemorative manifesto will be read. In addition, a 27 -meter European flag will be coupled, accompanied by a dance performance and a castellera exhibition, among other activities.
The third act of the day will be the concentration organized by the Consell Català del Moviment Europeu at 6:00 p.m., convened before the Cathedral of Barcelona and under the motto: “by a united and democratic Europe.”
At 19:00, the Catalunya Europe Foundation and the representation of the European Commission in Barcelona will deliver in the Sant Jaume square of the ‘Europe Jove’ and ‘What are your Europe?’, Two calls that recognize creativity, reflection and European commitment of the youngest. Simultaneously, the same place will house the institutional concert of Europe’s Day, free and open to all citizens. Under the name FEMJazz 25, this will be a female and European jazz concert organized by the EUNIC, which groups the National Institutes of Culture of the European Union.
The ‘classic’ also adds to the celebrations of Europe
The Superior Sports Council (CSD) announced on Wednesday that Spanish sports competitions will be added to the ‘Day of Europe’ Day ‘(May 10 and 11) enhancing “the sport link with Europe and the defense of its values”. To do this, flags, flags and European bracelets will be deployed in the different events.
An outstanding example of this initiative will be Sunday’s ‘classic’ between the Barcelona Club Football and Real Madrid. Before the decisive league meeting, an institutional act will be held in the box, with the assistance of authorities and the delivery of a commemorative flag. Upon entering the pitch, both team soccer players will be accompanied by children dressed in an EU equipment and waving European flags. This sample of support will be extended to the entire league, since the captains of the 42 teams of LaLiga EA Sports and LaLiga Hypermotion will carry bracelets with the European flag in the 21 games scheduled for the day.
