American actress Halle Berry, Franco-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani and the South Korean filmmaker Hong Sangsoo are part of the jury for the next Cannes festival, chaired by the French actress, Juliette Binoche, announced the organizers on Monday, April 28.
Composed of nine members – Five women and four men -, this jury, in which it is also the Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher and the American actor Jeremy Strong, must in particular award the Palme d’Or of the 78e edition, which is held from May 13 to 24.
Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia, Grand Prix last year, Mexican director Carlos Reygadas, and the documentary maker of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Dieudo Hamadi complete this very international panel which will have to decide between the 21 films selected in competition.
Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Mothers), Iranian Jafar Panahi (A simple accident), the American Wes Anderson (The Phoenician Scheme) or the French Hafsia Herzi (The little last) will compete for the favors of the jury, which will notably designate the successor ofAorfrom the American Sean Baker, Palme d’Or 2024, at the top of the Cannes charts.

Hong Sangsoo, prolific director
To carry out her task, the multipressed actress Juliette Binoche (Oscar, César, interpretation prize in Cannes …) will notably be accompanied by Halle Berry, the first African-American to win the Oscar for the best actress for her performance in “In the shade of hatred” In 2002. The actress, known especially for her roles in blockbusters (« Catwoman », « X-Men »), went to the production in 2020 with his first film “Bruised”.
At their side, the prolific director Hong Sangsoo knows the Cannes festival well for having seen four of the feature films selected in competition, of which “Woman is the future of man” (2004) or “The day after” (2017).
Successful novelist and co-author of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics in 2024, Leïla Slimani is the only member of the jury without direct link with the 7th Art, even if her novel “Sweet song”winner of the prestigious Goncourt Prize in France in 2016, was adapted to the cinema.
Last year, the festival jury was chaired by the American filmmaker Greta Gerwig (Barbie), and notably counted among its members the French actor Omar Sy and the Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-Eda.

Nicole Kidman will receive the Women in Motion Prize
In addition to the palm and the prices awarded in the other official sections (a certain look, the gold camera), the Cannes festival will again pay tribute to big names of the 7the Art this year. Nicole Kidman will be awarded the 10the Women in Motion Prize, which distinguishes personalities who “Change the place of women in cinema and in society”during the 78e Cannes Film Festival in May, the organizers said on Monday.
