The university handball team treasures several years of experience in the Andalusian Championship. Last year they stayed at one step away from gold, stroking a dream that this time, to the third, managed to become a reality. The final, at odds in its first minutes, gave way to a second part in which the UMA Malaga team broke the balance with six goals of difference and sealed a deserved and long -awaited victory.
What were the keys to a “easier way than expected”, according to his own words? The team, formed by 14 university girls, keeps a great secret to achieve success. It is summarized in a word: ‘pineapple’. Many of them share a handball club: eleven belong to the Mijas Team of Division of Honor Silver. This factor makes the group “a team that is complemented both on and off the track,” says Laura Diéguez, her coach.
The role of the coach is always a fundamental thing in a competition. “They have made me very easy,” says the coach between his laughter. Besides, I knew much of the team, which has facilitated the dynamics of work between her and the players. “Although enduring 14 girls … it should not be easy,” adds Silvia Luque, goalkeeper.
One of the most difficult things to define in a team is its form of play. However, Laura de la Palma, team pivot, summarizes it in two simple words: defend and run. In addition, it emphasizes the importance of the counterattack with rapid pass from the goalkeeper. One of the points that want to improve on the track is the initial concentration. The players comment on the difficulty that the matches involve.
The next challenge that girls will have to face is the CEU (University Spain Championship). From May 20 to 23, the players will fight to bring home, once again, the gold, but the national, of course. They will be tense days for university students, since the great tournament coincides with the exams. Concentration or discipline should not be missing to overcome those moments. Without taking off the feet of the earth, the players are aware of the level of the clubs they face. Even so, they are determined to face the competition with ambitions and take the gold, once again, home.
Before concluding, players encourage all young people to gather their group of friends and sign up for the sports activities offered by the university. “If you do not take advantage of these years to live this experience, you will not be able to live it again,” recalls one of the players.
