It is difficult to limit in a few lines what Eve online, the mastodontic MMO MMO of CCP games means. Since May 2003, millions of players have starred in stories marked by both madness and rocambolesco, since A war between 7,548 users that cost $ 300,000 It’s just a small example of The passion that awakens Eve online. Thus, either because of the passion of your community, because of its free character or for any other aspect that we could cite, it is undeniable that this Icelandic title has become one of the most important in the history of the medium.
A few days ago, Eve Online announced her road map and revealed the existence of Legionthe future expansion of the experience that will debut on May 27. This announcement was made during Eve Fanfest, an annual event that congregates the members of the community to share the novelties of the title and commemorate all the feats they have achieved together. Thanks to Cosmocover, I not only had the opportunity to attend its 2025 edition, but I could also try Eve Vanguard (your next MMOFPS bet) and interview one of the most important members of CCP Games: Snorri Arnsson, director of Eve Online, and Bergur Finbogasson, creative director of Eve Online.
What is Eve Vanguard?
when Caesar is from Caesar: It is undeniable that CCP Games cares about its community. And 22 years marked by total devotion by their players They are not a sufficient sample of this quality, everything that surrounds this space experience is a perfect example of it. After the occasional attempt to escape from the comfort zone and launch a proposal away from the title that has led them to be the third largest company in Iceland, CCP Games will return to the load with Eve Vanguard, a MMOFPS proposal that I could try to tell you everything you need to know about it. Even so, before entering the subject, I will tell you what the study itself told us shortly before getting to work: “We are the only study in the world that allows you to try a broken game.”

With that statement, on horseback between irony and reality, the Icelandic study already prepared me for what I was about to see: An advance with many aspects by polishing. The Eve Vanguard base is interesting, since he tries to move The MMORPG formula Towards a land marked by the first person action, shots and cooperation. As a direct consequence of this, communication becomes one of the most important aspects and, in fact, the central axis of playability, given that the organization with the rest of your team will be decisive to extract resources, successfully advance and fulfill your mission.
Eve vanguard does not invent the wheel, but it is not its purpose either
If I go to the deepest playability, you could define Eve vanguard with a phrase that was around my head while trying its virtues: Does not invent the wheel, but you don’t intend to do it either. Shooting enemies is satisfactory and, despite the absence of textures in weapons, it is the most positive point of the advance I played, since they have been able to capture the differences between shotguns, submachine guns, guns and other available options. It may seem obvious, but there are projects that do not even make this attempt to distinguish between options, which is why Eve Vanguard has an important point in favor.
Regarding the exploration, environment and their design, Eve Vanguard aims to be one of the most attractive titles of its kind. Being a closed test, I planted before a gigantic scenario full of life and elements with which to interactbut lacking threats beyond the already scheduled. Thus, this situation will change radically when the game debuts as Early Access in September 2026, since the meetings with other players will raise the general sensation of the experience. At the moment, as I said, it has a good base that must still be polished to reach an optimal state.

Being a test that went (speaking fast and badly) “direct to the grain”, there are many aspects that I could not check as much as I would like. An example of this is Personalization, one of Eve’s strengths That will also be present at Eve Vanguard, but they have not yet clarified if it will be at the same level. Be that as it may, the intention of the study is continue polishing the experience to offer a proposal at the height of expectationssince the community has always expected to see what it is capable of offering CCP Games beyond its mastodontic spatial. Thus, after several promises and the occasional title that never came to see the light, Eve Vanguard prepares to marvel at the fans of the Icelandic study and the lovers of the MMOFPS as of September of next year.
The passion of the community of Eve Online
Although Eve Vanguard became the main dish of Eve Fanfest 2025, it was not the only experience I lived there. Thanks to the opportunity offered by Cosmocover, I was also able to interview Snorri Arnason (director of Eve Online) and Bergur Finbogasson (creative director of Eve online). Both, thanks to their role within CCP Games, their multiple years of experience and their opposite personalities, offered a particular vision of what it implies be part of such a gigantic study. Thus, through a joint interview with José Sempere (Eurogamer’s partner), we both could know why they feel so much devotion to their community.
-“We cannot offer everything for everyone, we are not surrendering, but we are paying our attention on another approach.”
Arnason, who has a quieter profile and speaks with a much calmer tone, tried one of Eve’s most complex aspects: The entrance barrier to MMORPG. Both he and Finbogasson (Note: It is a whirlwind made person, someone capable of constantly irradiating) pointed out that it is the greatest challenge they face, since they are aware of how complicated it is to enter their experience after more than 20 years of validity. However, Arnason says that they still care about new players despite their change of approach: “We cannot offer everything for everyone, we are not surrendering, but we are paying our attention on another approach.”

In this way, although both defend that Eve online’s difficulty is an essential part of her identitythe vision of the study focuses on the importance of the community in any aspect related to the game. Thanks to the role of veterans, newbies experience that feeling of “family” that surrounds this proposal. Either with advice, alliances or other types of interaction, Finbogason revealed that a member of the CIA who plays his title was able to explain why the ties that are forged in Eve online are so narrow:
One of the things that I am most proud is what we have done for friends. In 2017, 2018 and 2019 we asked the players why they played online and, among terms such as “death”, “destruction” and others, we found a CIA member who told us about the concepts of friendship. He told us that you need 2,000 hours to make someone your best friend and told us about the four formulas that exist to measure friendship: proximity, frequency, plans and intensity (the latter seems poetic to me). The thing is that Video games enhance intensityWe find that if a new player dies and a veteran explains why, there begins a curious form of friendship. There is a lot of human connection on Eve online.
In general, every corner of Eve Fanfest emanated that idea in which both emphasized: friendship is the basis of Eve online’s experience. Either in the words of the members of CCP Games or in that of the players, the truth is that The feeling of being part of a community It was a constant that was breathed in every corner. Thus, what for me was an opportunity to go to Reykiavik, visit the offices of the Icelandic study and try Eve Vanguard, for hundreds of people it was an annual event that has become the most important of their lives. There, regardless of who you were or what life plans you had, time stopped to commemorate the importance of Eve online.

Thanks to these events, journalists can prove what the developers are working on and know an important part of the project ins and outs. However, being part of an event of this caliber is another level, since you share a thousand and one experiences of all kinds with people from several corners of the world. For me, this began as another “work trip” with the exception that I had to go to Iceland; Five later, already with the suitcase already made point to take off to Tenerife, my vision was different: Eve online is a passion that many are not able to understand.
Really, how beautiful video games can become.
