The EU will completely end its dependence on Russian energy
The EU will cease to depend on Russian energy ending the importation of Russian gas and oil and gradually eliminating Russian nuclear energy, guaranteeing at the same time the stability of supply and energy prices throughout the union.
The Repowereu roadmap, presented today by the European Commission, paves the way to guarantee the full energy independence of the EU with respect to Russia.
Despite the important advances achieved within the framework of the Repowereu Plan and through the sanctions from the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, in 2024 The EU experienced a rebound in Russian gas imports. Therefore, we need more coordinated actions, since the excessive dependence of the EU of Russian energy imports constitutes a threat to security.
In the words of the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen: “The war in Ukraine has brutally revealed the risks of blackmail, economic coercion and prices disturbances. With Repowereu, we have diversified our energy supply and drastically reduced the Europe Aggression against Ukraine.
The road map establishes a Gradual elimination of Russian oil, gas and nuclear energywhich will be carried out in a coordinated and safe manner as we advance in our energy transition. The measures have been designed to preserve the security of the EU energy supply, at the same time limiting any impact on prices and markets.
It is expected that From 2025, the world of LNG grows quickly, while the gas demand will decrease. With the full application of the energy transition frame and the action plan for affordable energy, the EU is expected to replace up to 100 billion cubic meters of natural gas from here to 2030, which means a decrease in demand of between 40,000 and 50 billion cubic meters from here to 2027. At the same time, it is expected that LNG capabilities will increase around 200 billion cubic meters from here 2028, that is, five times more than the current imports of Russian gas in the EU.
