The Public Space NGO registered 10 violations of freedom of expression in Venezuela last April, the most serious of them the arrest of journalist Nakary Ramos Mena and that of her husband Gianni González.
They were arrested in Caracas and presented them in court under the charges of “hateful instigation” and “publication of false news”, after they reported for the means of Venezuela on whether or not crimes in Caracas had increased.
The non -governmental organization recalled that there were more than 70 hours disappeared until its presentation before the First Control Court of the Caracas Metropolitan Area that ordered its private liberty.
Before his arrest, the Minister of Internal Relations, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, referred to his weekly television program against complaints in social networks about the alleged increase in robberies in Caracas, saying that it was a campaign orchestrated on social networks.
In total there were four cases of judicial harassment, four of intimidation and two of censorship. Public Space recalled that on April 15, the social journalist and social activist Carlos Julio Rojas turned a year in prison, in which he has not had a private defense and his legal representatives have not had access to the judicial file.
Another case that highlighted was that of Mr. Luis López, 83, whom they arrested on January 21 for expressing in a poster the figures of the results of the presidential presidentials of July 28, 2024 who announced the opposition.
-In addition, a court in Carabobo ratified the sentence of 15 years in prison against political leader Nelson Piñero, imprisoned since November 2023 for expressing himself in his social networks.
Public Space mentioned that the National Telecommunications Commission (CONATEL) imposed economic measures against Internet operating companies in the country, “an indirect mechanism that affects the right to freedom of expression and adds to the effects of complex humanitarian emergency in Venezuela,” said the NGO.
SELL IACHO warns about deterioration in Venezuela
This same week the Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter -American Commission on human Rights (IACHR) warned about the deterioration of freedom of expression in Venezuela.
In a press release they went to the international community to warn “about the serious and progressive deterioration of the media ecosystem in Venezuela, as well as the growing climate of fear and self -censorship between journalists and citizenship that seeks to exercise their right to freedom of expression”
While requested from the Venezuelan authorities “to respect and guarantee the rights to freedom of expression and press, in accordance with international standards in human rights.”
