Washington. Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua remain with serious governmental actions, according to Annual 2024 Report of the Inter -American on Rights (IACHR) published on May 8.

It is an “radiography of the human rights situation in all countries of the region” with “regressive tendencies” in the field of “judicial independence, democratic institutions, persecutions of defenders of human rights, migratory policies or the use of violence by police and ,” said Andrea Pochak, vice president of the IACHR.

In Cuba the IACHR “does not observe an improvement” and calls the Castro to “ban illegal or arbitrary arrests.”

The commission also looks with magnifying glass, where “arbitrary arrests persist to suppress any opposition position” in a context of “complete absence of an impartial system,” denounces.

The government of the president Nicolás Maduro carried out “a planned strategy aimed at discouraging the participation of the opposition, preventing the of a , fair and competitive contest and repressing social protests,” he adds.

Guatemala, leaves the blacklist

The IACHR, an body of the Organization of American States (OAS), withdrew Guatemala from Chapter IV.B, a section that alerts systematic threats to human rights.

It leaves in part because the government of President Bernardo Arévalo, who assumed the position in January 2024, has allowed the IACHR to visit the country.

“When so, the commission gives it an opportunity to improve the relationship and have a more productive dialogue” but “it still has serious problems of democratic institutionality,” said the vice president.

The IACHR includes Peru in Chapter V, the section of countries that follows closely to verify if they meet their recommendations. It is also integrated by , El Salvador and , which already appeared in the past.
