A young man detained last year in Venezuela in the middle of the crisis unleashed after the questioned re -election of President Nicolás Maduro, died in state custody, denounced on Sunday (04.05.2025) the opposition leader María Corina Machado and an NGO.
Lindomar Amaro, 27, was held in the Tocorón prison, a maximum security penalty located in the Aragua state (center). They had arrested him for “incitement to hatred, harassment and possession of a war weapon,” according to the military part last July, who said he had a history of “common generic theft.”
The Committee for the Freedom of political Prisoners said Sunday that Amaro died on May 3 in the Tocorón prison.
“The reported cause was hanging inside his cell,” the Oenegé wrote on the social network X, and recalled that Amaro “had already attacks his life.”
Machado holds Nicolás Maduro
Machado, who claims the victory of the opposition in the presidential elections of July 2024 in which Maduro was proclaimed reelected, accused the president of the death of Amaro.
“This is one of the most horrendous crimes that this regime has committed. No one doubts it: this death has only one responsible: Maduro,” Machado said, also in his account in X.
Maduro’s proclamation for a third consecutive mandate (2025-2031) unleashed protests that left 28 dead and some 2,400 detainees, of which more than 2,000 have been released. Activists denounced despite the arrests of opponents have not ceased.
The Committee also denounced that Jhoandri Silva, Amaro’s partner, “tried to commit suicide” at the same time.
A dozen “political prisoners” killed in state custody
Venezuelan authorities attributed to Silva the same crimes as Amaro and a record for “physical violence and drug trafficking.
Since 2014, at least a dozen “political prisoners” have died under the custody of the Venezuelan State, according to human rights activists.
The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners said Sunday that, with the death of Amaro, at least six detainees died between 2024 and what goes from 2025 “confirming a policy of abandonment and impunity within the prison system.”
