Apr 28, 2024, 7:22 PM ET

The German Alexander Zverev (No. 5 in the ATP ranking) defeated the Canadian Denis Shapovalov (No. 132) by 6-4 and 7-5 to earn a place in the round of 16 of the Madrid Masters 1000.

The German, champion of this competition in 2018 and 2021, had to work late into the night since the match ended around 01:00 AM (local time). The award? Face the Argentine Francisco Cerúndolo (No. 22) in the round of 16.

The Argentine, a few hours before, had fought a tough two and a half hour battle against the American Tommy Paul (No. 16) with a score of 6-7 (7), 6-4 and 6-2.

Zverev and Cerúndolo will meet for the first time on the circuit. His extensive experience and great results in this competition position the German as the great favorite, although the Argentine will seek to make a big splash on Spanish soil. Can he make it?
