Mexican right-hander Giovanny Gallegos was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with right shoulder discomfort, the Cardinals announced. In other moves, fellow right-handed pitcher Chris Roycroft was named to the 40-man roster and center fielder Tommy Edman (right wrist) was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Gallegos is 2-1 with a 12.00 ERA and two holds and one save in 13 games. He has been hit especially hard lately, giving up 12 earned runs in his last nine innings. Additionally, he hasn’t recorded an out in his last two appearances against the Tigers and White Sox. On Sunday, he gave up his fifth home run of the year, and also had two doubles before being removed from the game.

Roycroft has posted a 1.38 ERA in 11 games (13 innings) this season for Triple-A Memphis. To make room on the 40-man roster, Edman was moved from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. Edman, who had surgery on his right wrist in October, has not yet played this season.

Gallegos has been one of baseball’s most durable pitchers, leading the National League in appearances (268) and innings pitched in relief (283.1) since 2019. He led the Cardinals in games pitched in 2021 (73) and 2022 (57). before falling to third place in 2023 (56) due to poor effectiveness and a season-ending shoulder injury.
