“You can always get greedier with money, but everyone who is greedy with money will gradually become the nail in the coffin of football. If at some point all the money leaves (the market), then there will be nothing left to do business with. We are talking about hundreds of millions. It’s too much and at some point you have the feeling that it’s going to explode,” said the Bavarian manager when asked about the brand new Real Madrid signing.
The head of Bayern’s sports area highlighted that the current market situation in football is not sustainable and that oversaturation could lead to significant intervention by other entities, such as Saudi Arabia. “At some point it will be oversaturated and Saudi Arabia will come. That doesn’t give me good feelings. I have to say that to be fair, but that’s the market right now. Money is leaving the market. No club benefits from this. The players, the families, the agents, everyone benefits, but not the clubs. In the past, at least the clubs benefited. The money remained in the cycle and that will become less and less,” he stressed.
Furthermore, Eberl addressed the dilemma clubs face between sporting success and financial stability. “Of course, I know you won’t applaud me here if we finish fifth, but our tally has increased. You just want to harmonize both things. ANDBayern has managed to do it time and time again. Of course, I also want to be successful. As the person responsible for the sports area, I am also in this dilemma,” he concluded.
