Spain announced its team swimming for the Paris 2024 Olympic Gamesa group of 18 swimmers led by the world champion of the 200 m backstroke, Hugo Gonzalezand where the absence of Mireia Belmontewho was unable to overcome his physical problems to reach the Olympic minimum.
The 2024 Spanish Swimming Championships defined the last names of the Olympic team, and confirmed Hugo González’s podium aspirations. The Mallorcan, who swam at home, achieved the best world record of the year in the 200 m backstroke just five weeks before the Games (1:54.51).
González also sufficiently won the 100 m backstroke and the 200 m medley, the other two individual events he will compete in his debut at the Olympic Games. His participation will be completed with the men’s 4×100 m medley relay.
The championship also served as a debut for another of the great promises of Spanish swimming, Carmen Weiler (2004), who broke his own national record in the 100 m backstroke. The Valencian will also share the 200 m backstroke with Africa Zamoranowhich will experience its third Olympic Games.
The list also includes Emma Carrascowho will double in the 200 m events (same event as his father Jordi in Sydney 2000) and 400 m medley; Carlos Garach, which will compete in all the long distance events (800 m, 1,500 m and 10 km); and the open water duo that form Maria de Valdes and Angela Martinez.
After shining at the European Swimming Championships, De Valdés (world medalist in Doha) and Martínez confirmed that they will arrive in very good shape at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
