Total, Uruguay and the United States have faced each other eight times with a completely equal record: There were two victories for each side and four draws.
The last four times they faced each other was in friendly matches, with draws in 1995, 2019 and 2022, and an American victory in the remaining one, in 2002.
This streak forces us to go until 1993 to find the last Uruguayan victory against the United Statesalthough the context may be encouraging since it was for the Copa América of that year. In that duel, for the first date of the competition, the Celeste won 1 to 0 with a goal by Santiago Ostolaza, in a team that was directed by Luis Cubilla.
Before this clash, only three other matches are recorded: a 1-0 victory for the United States in a friendly in 1991, a 1-1 draw in another friendly game in 1986, and a Uruguayan victory in the 1924 Olympic Games by 3-3. 0, in the historic tournament that would crown the Celeste with the gold medal.
This means that the only two matches played “for points”, that is, in official competitions, were won by Uruguay.
Regarding the last match (0-0 draw in 2022), and who could repeat this Monday, that day José María Giménez, Guillermo Varela, Manuel Ugarte, Matías Viña and Darwin Núñez were starters, while Mathías Olivera, Federico Valverde and Facundo Pellistri had minutes from the substitutes’ bench.
