Blackmagic’s latest step into box-style cameras

Blackmagic continues to deepen its commitment to cinema cameras with the Pyxis 6K, a box format camera with a 6K sensor, 13-stop dynamic range and compatibility with L, PL or EF lenses.

The new one Blackmagic Pyxis It presents among its main characteristics a full frame sensor which allows filming with a resolution of 6048×4032. This bet offers the possibility of recording with a reduced depth of field or using anamorphic lenses taking advantage of the entire sensor area, in order to achieve a cinematic appearance. Regardless of whether recording in broad daylight or low-light conditions, the dynamic range of 13 steps and the value Maximum Dual Native ISO of 25,600 They allow images to be captured with a very low noise level in various lighting conditions.

By taking advantage of the entire sensor area, a recorded image is obtained that captures the entire frame with a 3:2 aspect ratio, allowing shots to be reframed during post-production. Thanks to the considerable size of the sensor, it is possible to work with a 6:5 aspect ratio in anamorphic format without cropping the image, which provides more details in this type of shots and a resolution that was not possible before.

The Blackmagic Pyxis model allows you to record in all the resolutions and frame rates common in 4K and 6K and even take pictures of 24.6 megapixels. Additionally, it supports frame rates up to 36 f/s at 6048 x 4032 with the full sensor or 60 f/s 6048×2520 (2.4:1) and 60 f/s 4096×2160 in DCI 4K format. Using higher values provides the opportunity to reduce the usable area of the sensor and film at 120 f/s in 2.8K resolution (2868 x 1512, 17:9),

The system comes in three versions that adapt the system to objectives L, EF or PL. The L lens mount version allows you to use the latest full-frame models developed by Leica, Panasonic and Sigma, while also providing compatibility with a wide range of new and classic lenses through the use of adapters. For its part, the EF mount version supports photographic lenses from digital SLR cameras (DSLR) or even those used in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera models, while the PL version offers the opportunity to work with professional lenses from manufacturers such as Zeiss, Arri and Cooke without the need for an adapter.

Integrated large LCD screen

LCD touch screen model Blackmagic Pyxis It provides the opportunity to view different data, as well as monitor images on the recording set given its dimensions and its compatibility with HDR audiovisual material. Likewise, its resolution allows you to frame and focus without having to resort to large external monitors.

Regarding the rest of the body of the Pyxis, it has a “logical design” that simplifies access to essential features, such as the ISO sensitivityhe white balance and shutter. Likewise, it has three programmable buttons that simplify access to the different functions. It should be noted that these controls can be locked to prevent unexpected changes to settings during filming or when the camera is out of range.

Blackmagic’s solution also integrates side supports that provide greater flexibility when adapting the camera to different jobs. The stand included with the unit is made from the same aircraft-grade aluminum as the frame and features two 6.35 mm (1/4 in) and one 9.50 mm (3/8 in) threaded holes that allow for the addition of microphones and other accessories. The camera also integrates an SSD drive holder that provides a secure place to place USB-C drives or even mobile phones for live streaming over the Internet.

Blackmagic - Pyxis 6KRAW and H.264, in parallel

The Blackmagic Pyxis model includes a USB-C expansion portwhich allows recording directly to external flash drives or SSD drives, and two card slots CFexpress, which are much more durable and faster than older storage media and are ideal for recording high-resolution 12-bit Blackmagic RAW files. These compartments provide the ability to continue recording without needing to pause to change the storage device.

The Blackmagic Pyxis 6K not only records in Blackmagic RAW in order to preserve details and control exposure and color during post-production, but also files H.264 proxy in HD resolution that can be easily shared instantly. In this way, “unprecedented” resolution and quality are guaranteed for chromatic adjustments, overlays, compositions and resizing, stabilization and tracking tasks, both in HD, 4K and 6K.

H.264 proxy can be uploaded to the platform Blackmagic Cloud “in a matter of seconds”, which makes it possible for the content to be available in the studio “instantly”. This data upload can be executed through the data connection provided by an iPhone or Android phone connected through the camera’s USB-C port, although the system also integrates Ethernet connections. In any case, the camera’s viewfinder and screen are capable of displaying the transmission status and transfer speed.

Blackmagic - Pyxis 6KConnectivity and accessories

Blackmagic Pyxis 6K allows you to connect the optional electronic viewfinder Blackmagic URSA Cinema EVF in order to facilitate filming both outdoors and with a handheld camera. This accessory includes a OLED screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080, an integrated proximity sensor and a four-element glass diopter with wide focus adjustments for greater precision.

Blackmagic’s latest solution also offers a wide variety of connections for audio devices, monitors and power supplies. For example, it has a 12G SDI output through which UHD images with wide dynamic range are transmitted and which also allows you to connect monitors to monitor the recorded material and view essential camera data. SDI connections provide the possibility of using longer cables, making it easier to use units that are further away.

Finally, the Blackmagic Pyxis model has an integrated transmission engine compatible with protocols RTMP and SRT that allows you to transmit through platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and X.
