Description

On Wednesday, June 19, 11:00, in the auditorium of the Carlos Santamaría Center of the University of the Basque Country, in Donostia / San Sebastián, the event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the University Institute of Polymeric Materials, POLYMAT, will take place. the UPV/EHU. Eva Ferreira, rector of the University of the Basque Country, José M. Asua, first director of POLYMAT, and José Muñoz, manager of ORIBAY group Automotive, will participate in the event. Likewise, in the entrance hall of the Ignacio Mª Barriola Center of the UPV/EHU, you can visit the exhibition with the winning photos of the scientific photography contests organized by POLYMAT.

“POLYMAT is a research institute of the UPV/EHU that was created in 1999 in the Faculty of Chemistry to respond to the requirements from the industrial sector, through a multidisciplinary research program in the field of polymers. Polymers are found in a wide variety of products that have shaped modern life, from paints, adhesives, plastics, medical implants, drug coatings to solar panels. In the future, polymers will continue to replace other materials in established applications and will play an important role in the development of the technologies necessary to address some of the challenges of the 21st century, such as energy, healthcare and sustainability,” explains María Paulis Lumbreras, current director of the aforementioned institute. This is dedicated both to supporting local and international industries in today’s problems of said polymer products and to fundamental research inspired by the use of synthesis, assembly and processing of polymers that, together with the theory and simulation, “make it possible to address the challenges that arise in the future. The technological and research experience combined with perfectly equipped laboratories make this university institute a leading research center in its field.”

Thus, it has four research groups that focus on Polymerization Processes, Polymer Processing, Polymer Science and Polymer Rheology. In these groups, María Paulis highlights the presence of prestigious researchers such as “José Mª Asua, Euskadi Research Award 2005, first director of the POLYMAT Institute, who has carried out fundamental research in industrially important polymerization processes; and David Mecerreyes, one of Stanford’s most cited researchers, who has led research in innovative polymer chemistry, polymeric ionic liquids, and polymers for bioelectronics and batteries.”
