Apple confirms new firmware for AirPods and Beats

Apple has started rolling out new firmware updates for all AirPods models and some Beats headphone models. According to a recent post on its website, Apple indicates that these updates address a Bluetooth vulnerability that could have allowed an attacker to access the user’s AirPods or Beats.

The update is available for AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, Powerbeats Pro, and Beats Fit Pro. Below is a summary of the latest firmware versions for AirPods following this update:

  • AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with MagSafe Charging Case (USB-C): 6.5.8 (6F8)
  • AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with MagSafe charging case (Lightning): 6.5.8 (6F8)
  • AirPods Pro (1st generation): 6A326
  • AirPods (3rd generation): 6A326
  • AirPods (2nd generation): 6A326
  • AirPods Max: 6A326
  • AirPods (1st generation): 6.8.8
  • Beats Fit Pro: 6F8
  • Powerbeats Pro: 6F8

Apple’s release notes for the recent AirPods and Beats updates state that they include “bug fixes and other improvements.” However, on its security page, Apple offers more specific details. The company mentions that the firmware updates address a vulnerability that could have allowed an attacker to “gain access to the headphones.”

When your hearing aids are searching for a connection request to one of your previously paired devices, an attacker within Bluetooth range may be able to impersonate the intended source device and access your hearing aids.

How to check the firmware version of your AirPods:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Navigate to the “Bluetooth” menu.
  3. Find your AirPods in the device list.
  4. Tap the “i” next to them.
  5. Look at the “Firmware Version” number.

It is not possible to manually update the firmware of your AirPods or Beats. Apple says your AirPods will automatically update when they’re charging and within Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that’s connected to Wi-Fi.
