It was December 15, 2000 when I bought my first mobile phone, a Nokia 3210, of which I have excellent memories. From that moment on, the SIM card has been an indispensable ally on this journey of almost a quarter of a century. Although I have already been using the electronic format, known as eSIM, today I can say that I have definitively said goodbye to the traditional physical card.

Goodbye SIM, the beginning of something new

I learned about the eSIM format at the end of 2019 and since my phone already supported it, I started using it when I had two lines. I opted for this type of virtual card with the line intended for work and I cannot say that my experience has been negative, on the contrary. But on the phone I still had the personal line with the traditional SIM.

Today, taking a look at the website of my operator, different from the one on the work line, I saw that The eSIM format was available by simply filling out a form from my personal area, and I thought it could be the way to say goodbye to plastic.

2 minutes were enough for complete the process and have the QR in the email to activate the line. So, once the entire process is completed, you have to scan that code with the phone in which you are going to install the virtual card. I have removed the physical SIM and the truth is, I don’t remember when I had it operational. Probably more than four or five years, and although it hasn’t given me any problems during this time, like any physical product it is prone to deterioration.

The thing is, once I removed the physical card my phone continued to work normally. It is worth keeping in mind that once the eSIM is activated, The physical card is now cancelled.a, but a cut of scissors has been my definitive break after 24 years of relationship with this format.

Goodbye SIM: from today I no longer use it in physical format

Perhaps one of the most interesting advantages of the SIM card is that if you need it, You won’t have to spend more than two minutes to get your line back. This is the case when it is time to renew the device, these cards are designed for a single terminal, unlike plastic ones. When that time comes, completing this process will allow you to enjoy mobile service again immediately.

But there is more, the traditional electronic format of the SIM card is becoming established because It comes in handy in situations such as travel. You no longer need to find a shop at your destination and buy a prepaid card to use internet data or a telephone line. There are many websites that offer you an eSIM valid for any country at very attractive prices. Even Revolut customers can purchase it from their own application and pay for these virtual cards that are installed immediately without wasting time.

He physical format is doomed to disappear, although there is still no regulation that has put an end date on the horizon. The electronic version is much more practical, comfortable and of course, safe. 8597 days later, bye bye, SIM.
