Gabriel Dumont Park bridge to be repaired after early April fire

The wooden pedestrian bridge at the Saskatchewan Crescent West entrance to Gabriel Dumont Park is scheduled for repairs.

A fire on the morning of April 11 led to the temporary closure of the bridge. The fire department put the fire out and turned the scene over to the City of Saskatoon facilities department for assessment, a news release said at the time.

A bridge engineer has reviewed the structure and concluded the damage was concentrated on the east end of the bridge, the city said in a Tuesday news release.

“Fortunately, the fire did not significantly affect the structural capacity of the bridge and the assessment concluded the walkway bridge does not need to be replaced.”

Repairs will include replacing about 7.5 meters of floorboards, railings and posts, and the center wood support boards. The railings will also be repainted when repairs are finished.

“Barring any unknown circumstances, an external contractor is scheduled to start work Tuesday, April 30, estimating about two weeks to complete,” the city noted.

Pedestrians are asked to avoid the area until repairs are complete and the walkway is reopened. Signs directing people to an alternative route have been posted.
