Officials confirm Washington murder suspect dead after chase on I-5 | News

EUGENE, Ore. – Traffic on Interstate 5 was slowed due to a sizable police response for a high-speed chase just north of Eugene related to an Amber Alert from Washington.

Numerous law enforcement officers responded to reports of a suspect speeding down southbound Interstate 5 at about 2:53 pm on April 23. The suspect reportedly crashed near Milepost 197 near Armitage Park. Police said shots were fired during the chase. Oregon State Police confirmed the driver, Elias Huizar, 39, shot himself in the head at the end of the pursuit.

Oregon State Police confirmed that a child who was in the vehicle is safe in police custody. I-5 is severely backed up in both directions due to the police response, but one lane is open.

The incident is related to an Amber Alert out of Washington that came early in the morning of April 23. It involves Elias Huizar, a former Yakima, Washington police officer who is accused of killing his ex-wife and girlfriend as well as kidnapping his one -year-old are.
