Philadelphia 76ers’ car accident sparks internal police affairs investigation

The Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) have launched an internal investigation following how the Philadelphia 76ersKelly Oubre Jr..’s car accident was handled by on-the-scene officers on Monday, April 22.

The crash took place shortly after the NBA star’s side lost Game 2 of the Playoffs to the New York Knicks when Oubre Jr.’s Lamborghini was said to have “disregarded a red traffic signal” before colliding with a Hyundai, leaving both vehicles with terminal damage and in need of a tow away from the scene around 01:45.

The PPD are looking into whether the athlete received preferential treatment by officers due to his status as he was not issuing a ticket for traffic violations, nor were tests conducted to see if he was drunk or under the influence of substance abuse.

Oubre Jr. later appeared to admit his own involvement and responsibility in the crash that wrecked his 2021 sports car just hours after the postseason loss.

“Everything is good,” Oubre said after Game 3, according to USA Today. “I’m OK.

“The people that were involved were OK, but I need to probably get a driver or something and just stay off the road and behind the wheel, but everything is good. I’m good. I was still able to do my job and support my family and things are great.”

With their playoff picture on the line, it wouldn’t have been unthinkable for the 76ers to completely drop Oubre Jr. from the line-up due to his gross recklessness in the car accident, but instead they permitted him to play in Game 3.

That decision was vindicated instantly as they won the contest 125-114 at the Wells Centerwith the guard scoring 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists over 38 minutes in the April 25 game.

His season average is 15.4 points per game, five rebounds per game and 1.5 assists per game with a 44 percent field goal rate suggesting that the car accident hasn’t impacted him too much on the basketball court.

Game 4 takes place on April 28 at the Wells Fargo Center, beginning at 1:00 p.m. ET.
