Housing solutions for birds in Eibar

Eibarko Baso Biziak saw the light with the aim of recover the native forest, with work of planting specimens such as beech, oak and other trees typical of the Cantabrian coast, relegated to the background by the preeminence of forestry operations focused on more productive and economically profitable species such as pine or eucalyptus. This work is also accompanied by initiatives to make life easier for those who live in the forests of the Armero city, among which birds play a prominent role.

An example of this is the departure that Eibarko Baso Biziak has scheduled for this Sunday morning with the aim of placing artificial nests and thus help the birds that populate our forests have a safe place to shelter and nest, now that spring has just kicked off the breeding season.

The The delegation is scheduled to meet at 10:00 in Sautxi to begin from there the march towards Arizbakarraga, where Eibarko Baso Biziak guards a land intended to preserve and promote native tree species. Once at the destination, they will place 10 nesting cages with the aim of awakening the interest of the birds as a space to raise their chicks.

They are nests for specimens of small species. They are usually hung from a handle or an aluminum nail on medium or large trees three or more meters high.. The most common tenants of these nests are usually chickadees and titmice, but they are also used by other species that see it as an attractive space for breeding,” explained the members of Eibarko Baso Biziak.

Another objective of marches like the one that will take place this Sunday is to bring attendees closer to the natural environment that surrounds us, placing special emphasis on birds. In fact, during the tour they will have the opportunity to identify different species that live in the forests of Debabarrena, for which they will have the help of the members of Eibarko Baso Biziak and the support of new technologies, which are increasingly more relevant. in the world of Ornithology.

We will be attentive to the birds we see along the way to identify them, but we will also try to hear them and listen to their song.. In fact, it is the way most used by ornithologists when identifying the species that live in an area, since it is easier to hear the birds in the forest than to see them. In addition, today we have computer applications incorporated into mobile phones that facilitate this work. “They are apps that record the song of the bird and have a database of different species that allows it to be identified.”

Citizen participation

This Sunday’s initiative is part of a broader project that Eibarko Baso Biziak has been developing under the motto Help us recover our environment. The campaign covers various aspects such as the planting of native trees, the acquisition and custody of land, the maintenance of regattas, streams and rivers, and outreach activities in which citizen participation is relevant. (observation and placement of nests; knowledge of reptiles and their role in the natural environment; cleaning of streams and rivers; invasive plants; collecting acorns;…).

Eibarko Baso Biziak saw the light of day a few years ago when uA group of Eibartarras joined forces to reverse the critical situation of the region’s forests, victim of a monoculture forestry policy focused on species such as pine, eucalyptus, cryptomeria and sequoia. The measures to try to respond to this situation include the planting of local species and the acquisition and management of land intended to house trees typical of the Cantabrian mixed forest (oak, beech, birch, chestnut, ash, maple,… ) that they have been doing.

As of this Sunday, Eibarko Baso Biziak has more than 25 hectares of land in custody aimed at promoting the development of the native forest and has planted more than 2,000 specimens of trees typical of the Cantabrian ecosystem in which Debabarrena is located “The challenge is to protect and restore the native forest of Eibar and that of the surrounding territories, as well as maintain the biodiversity associated with its ecosystem. In short, we seek to revitalize the native forest and with it the plants and animals that live in it, in addition to maintaining the health of its river channels. These measures will result in an improvement in the quality of life of all citizens and will help build a more livable Eibar,” said the members of Eibarko Baso Biziak.
