51% of Argentines do not have access to water, gas or sewers

The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) shared a report titled “Indicators of living conditions of households in 31 urban agglomerations” in which it refers to the fact that 51% of those surveyed do not have access to any of the public services. (mains water, natural gas and sewer).

Along these lines, the report specifies that 90.1% of homes have access to the running water network; 66.7% access the natural gas network and 73.2% access the sewage network. From this it emerges that 9.9% of homes do not access the public running water network; 33.3% do not have mains gas; and 26.8% lack connection to sewage networks.

The data corresponds to the second half of 2023, the total population of the 31 agglomerations is 29,519,982 people and is made up of 10,048,811 households.

The report also details that 60.2% of the households surveyed own the home and the land, while 6.4% of the households own the home only. For their part, 22% of households are renters.

Another indicator that stands out is the area in which the home is located. Along these lines, 5.6%, that is, about 1.7 million people live near garbage dumps (at a distance of three or less blocks). While some 2.4 million people (8.1%) live in flood-prone areas (those where there have been floods in the twelve months prior to the time of the survey).

Regarding sanitation, the report details that 87.4% of homes (where 85% of people live) have adequate sanitation conditions, while the remaining 12.6% of homes do not have them. 15% of the people live in these homes.

“Households with inadequate sanitation are defined as those that have at least one of these characteristics: a) they do not have a bathroom, b) they have a bathroom outside the property, c) they share the bathroom with other homes, d) the bathroom drain is not connected to the public network (sewer) nor to a septic tank, or e) the bathroom does not have a water discharge”, explains the report.
