The Russo Brothers Share New Update on Disney’s Live-Action Hercules Remake

Guy Ritchie’s live-action Hercules movie is still in the works at Disney. Following rumors that Ritchie had exited the project, the Russo Brothers, who are producing the remake, have revealed what’s really going on with the project.

Per GamesRadar, Ritchie hasn’t exited the project at this point and is expected to be the director on the project. However, the Russo Brothers also say they are still “waiting on a script.“Without a finished script in place just yet, the project remains in limbo, but that also serves as confirmation that the movie hasn’t been scrapped. How long Disney and the Russos will wait for a script before moving on remains to be seen, and it’s also possible that the script for Ritchie’s film won’t end up getting greenlit.

The Russo Brothers tease where Extraction 3, starring Chris Hemsworth, is in the development process.

At one point, there were plans to make a theatrical animated sequel film for Hercules, but that did not come to fruition. The movie did get a direct-to-video follow-up in 1999, dubbed Hercules: Zero to Heroalthough that was formed as a combination of three episodes of the animated series spinoff, Hercules: The Animated Series. It was announced in 2020 that plans were in place at Disney to make a live-action adaptation of the 1997 film.

This is not uncommon at Disney. There have been many previous live-action reimaginings made for several animated Disney classics. Last year saw the release of The Little Mermaid in theaters, and there are others that are in the works. It was a matter of time before Hercules got to this point.

The animated Hercules film can be streamed on Disney+.
