Baseball Plates Eight In Win Over Grinnell

CHICAGO – University of Chicago baseball wrapped up their three-game series with Grinnell and looked to take the set in the rubber match. The Maroons responded quickly after the Pioneers got on the board in the third and had another big frame in the eighth as they won on Sunday by five.

RESULTS
Grinnell – 3
UChicago – 8

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Grinnell (14-20, 7-11 MWC) started the scoring at the top of the third inning, but University of Chicago (16-20, 15-6) was quick to respond in their half of the stanza. With two on, Jackson Slipock he drove the ball over the left field fence for a three-run homer, a hit that proved to be the game winner.
  • The Maroons pitching was once again stellar and saw Phil Hogan and Kirk Waller combine for almost eight innings of one run, four hit balls. Sam Klanot and David Flanagan He also contributed to the effort out of the pen as Waller recorded his fifth win of the season.
  • UChicago got some insurance runs in a big eighth inning where they sent all nine batters to the plate and scored five runs. The big strikes in the frame were an Erik Rindner double that scored two and a Richard Lu triple that plated the same amount, including himself as he’d come in to score on an errant relay throw. The Maroons tallied ten hits in total and won their 15th Midwest Conference game of the season with an 8-3 victory.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

  • Jackson Slipock: 2-for-5, run scored, home run, three RBIs
  • Kirk Waller: 3.2 scoreless innings pitched, one hit allowed, four strikeouts
