The Bluebirds ran-out very comfortable 6-0 winners against Undy

Coming off their first league loss of the season, Trethomas Bluebirds returned to winning ways with a thumping 6-0 win over Undy.

The Bluebirds were back at the Center for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach on Saturday April 27 after suffering their first league defeat of the season in midweek on the road to Goytre.

There were no signs of early nerves for Trethomas however, who settled into the game through a James Young goal. The midfielder had his second soon after, before a Levi Rees header made it 3-0 at the break.

The second-half was just as dominant from the Bluebirds. Gareth Tedstone returned from illness to score, with further goals from Thomas Gameson and Harvey Selway making it a comfortable 6-0 win for the hosts.

Kickoff

After a very out of sorts performance midweek in their 3-1 loss to Goytre, the Bluebirds looked keen to lay down an early marker in this one, up against a midtable side who had nothing left to play for in the Ardal South East.

From minute one it looked very ominous for Undy. The likes of James Saddler and Thomas Gameson had all day in the midfield to pick a pass out.

Former Aberitllery Bluebirds midfielder James Young was attempting a pass to the back post when his cross looped over keeper Jack Harris into the far corner.

There were half celebrations from Young, who seemed to have a good laugh with his teammates over the goal. Either way, it was an important one for Trethomas early in the match.

The goal did nothing to change the flow of the game, it was still one-way traffic in favor of the Bluebirds, with Undy pinned deep inside their own half.

Defender Ryan Bolter – who played a great 90 minutes – had a shot saved down low, as the Bluebirds were queuing up to score the inevitable second.

Despite Trethomas’ early dominance, it was actually the visitors who had the next best chance of the match.

A break down the right eventually fell to Bradley Hanbury who had time and space to get his shot off. Keeper Harry Irving closed the space down well however, and got down low to push the strike wide for a corner.

Bluebirds winger Ethan Edwards was seeing plenty of the ball down the left, and soon won a free-kick for the hosts.

Rees took the set piece and whipped-in a great ball to the near post with lots of pace. It only took the slightest of touches off Young’s head, but that was all it needed to beat Harris. 2-0 inside 25 minutes.

Edwards continued to cause trouble down the left, across this time he was in search of Gareth Tedstone, but the keeper collected well.

A cross up the other end however could have caused a lot more trouble. Once again it was Hanbury with the chance, but he couldn’t direct his header to anyone other than Irving in the center of the goal.

The Bluebirds soon punished Undy for that miss, Tedstone this time running in behind well before standing his man up and crossing to the near post.

Rees was there like a coiled spring waiting to attack, his glancing header nestled into the far corner to make it 3-0.

Edwards and Rees swapped wings before the break as they sometimes do, and both continued to find joy up against their fullbacks.

Edwards especially had the beating of Oliver Smith, skipping past the left-back before having his shot saved. The whistle blew shortly after for half-time.

Second-half

Undy began the second-half positively, and had the first half-chance through a James Gidney strike on the edge of the area. His effort was well over the bar however.

The game looked a bit more even, but the damage had already been done by the Bluebirds. It was a matter of how many they wanted to score now.

Tedstone was full of running after an hour played, he skipped past his man down the right before his cross seemed to hit an Undy arm in the box. Not given though.

The visitors were still making the odd mistake, and it wasn’t long before one led to a goal.

Henry Wall was the unlucky player in this instance. The defender played a short ball in his own box which was latched upon by Rees who is happy to run all day.

Firing a cross past the unsuspecting keeper, Tedstone was running-in at the back post like any good striker to tap home and make it four.

This seemed to knock any fight Undy had left to give, and it wasn’t long before Trethomas made it five.

It won’t get any easier for Gameson than this one; a cross from Edwards down the right should have been punched away by Harris.

The keeper missed the ball however, and Gameson was there to score his ninth league goal of the season.

The goal prompted manager Mark Dunford to take off some key players in Tedstone, Rees, and Edwards ahead of a huge midweek clash against rivals Risca.

It gave Jack Jones a chance to play a few minutes down the right. An incredibly exciting 20-year-old who scares defenders whenever he has ball at feet.

Bolter should have made it six with around ten-minutes to go, but his header at the back post somehow went wide.

He made up for it with his work rate late in the game however, closing down well and gathering the second ball.

With the game won a long time ago, there was just enough time for Harvey Selway to get his first goal as a Bluebird since joining from Risca earlier in the season.

It was probably the pick of the bunch too, a great strike from the edge of the area into the far corner left Harris rooted to the spot.

Full-time and it was more than a job well done from the Bluebirds, who responded well after their first league defeat.

They face another ‘cup final’ against Risca United on Tuesday April 30, knowing they’re just a handful of wins away from winning the league and gaining promotion to the Cymru South.
