Kannur: Five members of a family killed in a car accident at Punnacheri, near Cherukunnu in Kannur district on Monday night around 10.45 PM. According to the police, the persons got killed in the accident were KN Padmakumar (59) of Sasthampara, Kalichanadukkam, Kasaragod, who was driving the car, Choorikkatt Sudhakaran (52) of Bheemanadi, Sudhakaran’s wife Ajtha(35), her father Kozhummal Krishnan (65) and Ajitha’s brother Ajith’s son Akash (9).

The accident took place near the petrol pump at Punnacheri near Cherukunnu on Monday night. It is said that, the car got out of control as a lorry coming from behind hit it. Losing control, the car crashed head on to the lorry coming from the opposite direction.

The police said that, four persons were died on the spot and nine year old Akash died on the way to the hospital. The lorry carrying gas cylinders was coming from Mangaluru. Sudhakaran and his family members were going back to Kasaragod after the admission of his son Saurav in an educational institution at Kozhkode.

It was the local residents and those who were playing in a nearby turf who had reached the spot first. Later, Kannapuram police and fire and rescue team also reached the spot. The persons inside the car were taken out after breaking the car open. Kannapuram police have taken two drivers of the lorries involved in the accident into custody.
